Background knowledge is one obstacle to learning for my students. Many live at or below the poverty level and do not have many life experiences to help them understand what we are learning.
So, we go on many adventures together and we talk about these adventures as if we were really there. We have a map outside of our classroom that shows where we have been. We pull up images and articles that help us explore places we are learning about. We talk about what it would be like to go there, to eat the food, to talk to the people. Being able to pull up images in a small group, or on our adventures outside would be amazing!
My students love reading, but as a new teacher, my classroom library needs a little help. I would love to be able to have books that help support their amazing imaginations.
