Research has shown that after the age of 8 (3rd grade), students' motivation to read sharply declines. In fact, it drops by about 49%. This statistic is devastating as reading is still THE MOST crucial skill leading to success in the 21st century. If students lose the motivation to read, they also lose the ability to master a skill they so desperately need. As a 3rd grade teacher, I want to create an environment where students gain and maintain motivation to read. Since motivation is gained through choice, I want to create a classroom library that is engaging and diverse. In my student teaching, we had a young man move to our class from Libya. The experience was traumatizing as he was experiencing major culture shock. He also felt embarrassment since he had been held back a grade and didn't feel as smart as the other students. One way he was able to connect to the classroom and seamlessly continue his learning was through utilizing the class library. As a first-year teacher and fresh college graduate, I need some help setting up my first library. I currently have about 50 books to utilize. The recommended amount for a successful class library is 500. Any help in creating this environment for my students would be much appreciated. As a side note, I'm very passionate about having a wonderful class library (I'm preparing for it 4 months in advance. I would love to get access to alternate literature not listed here, such as books that show LGBTQ, Hispanic, and minority groups.
