While I've always aimed to help students have a voice in our classroom, this will be the first year that I'm going to start weekly circle time. Each year, I feel that I have a better handle on how I want to teach my students to understand themselves better. The results of a student who feels seen, feels heard, and feels understood are simply that the student wants to learn. The student wants to learn how to be a more analytical writer, a traveling reader, and a better human being. I want to use this microphone to begin an organized circle time that provides each student with a special time to share! Communication skills are the most pivotal part of the process of becoming a successful adult, and I want to ensure that each and every single one of my students are able to learn and to utilize this skill. Circle time will occur every Friday in our classroom. Sometimes the big question will be personal or emotional, connecting to each student as a person. Often times the big question will revolve around making our classroom skills relate to real-world applications. I envision circle time differently than a regular classroom discussion (of which we will have plenty). I imagine that circle time will be a discussion set aside for feeding the soul along with the mind. So, this microphone will help my students feel independent, seen, and absolutely heard. I want my students to know that their voices matter, and this will allow them to find that autonomy.
