Throughout the weeks of remote learning, many of my students have not been completing online assignments. After reaching out to each family and talking to them about their homeschooling experiences, I began to understand just how difficult it has been on students and parents. The majority of my students have siblings that also need to access internet resources and online material. This has put a strain on parents due to the lack of available technology in their households. One particular family has four school-aged children at various grade levels and only one parent cell phone to use. In addition to this stress, this particular family has lost four of their family members to COVID-19. Another family has three children in the household, again with only one cell phone to access internet resources. I spoke to the mom for almost an hour and discovered she was hospitalized and put on a ventilator for several weeks. During her hospital stay doctors worried about her lungs collapsing and the health of her unborn child. She is now out of the hospital but must give herself medical injections twice a day. She is doing this all while trying to teach her children from home. In addition, several parents have simply stated they do not have any technology in their household and have asked if there were resources available. These are just a few examples of families that could use assistance during this pandemic. By giving each student a tablet, this will ensure they can continue learning now and in the future. The use of technology is crucial to keep students on grade level this year and in the future.
