Funded Oct 25, 2019My students were extremely excited when they realized that we were getting new art materials. They could not wait for the opportunity to use them. They loved everything we were given, but they were especially excited about the acrylic paint. Not all my students knew what oil pastels were, but they learned to enjoy them.
We first used our art material for a Dia de Muertos project. The students had a writing activity about the Day of the Dead and along with it, they got to color a calavera. The students had the option of using oil pastels, markers or both to color the calavera. All my students were very creative and every calavera was very unique. Next, my students did hand turkeys for Thanksgiving. Not all my students liked having paint in their hand, but they all enjoyed using the acrylic paint to finish their turkey. The last big art project we have done was a guided drawing that my students turned into a painting. We practiced how to draw a penguin and a reindeer. My students then chose the animal they wanted to paint. It was very interesting to see how my students created their own vision of the same drawing.
My class is currently working on an animal report. Each student has chosen an animal to research and write an essay about. These animal reports will go on a book that our class will publish. Along with the written report the students will be creating a visual representation of their animal to put in the book. For this project I will give the opportunity to choose what matters they will use. This means that they will be able to do a drawing using marker or oil pastels, or make a painting of their animal. I am very excited and curious about what they will create. No matter what they create, I know that their creativity will give life to our book.”
With gratitude,
Ms. Crespo
