Sensory Rooms are special places that allow students of all abilities to self regulate and to have their sensory needs met. A sensory room is a stimulating or a calming place for all abilities to explore sensory input. Sensory rooms help us to find creative ways to address the various needs of students within our school environment. We will have various types of sensory activities including: vestibular swings, weighted blankets, calming areas. It also provides tactile, auditory, vestibular, proprioceptive and kinesthetic input. Many of the items requested serve a dual purpose. The swings help with balance, sensory integration and spacial orientation. The "Pea Pod" (canoe) helps with proprioception, the spatial understanding of our body. Students who crave deep pressure will benefit. We are all so excited about the opportunity to have a Sensory room in our new school. Since this is our first opportunity to have this type of classroom our budget allotted for a sensory room but it did not allot for extra monies for the items we need to fill the room. This room is a safe space for all students in our school community. We look forward to watching children grow, learn and experience new ways to thrive in their school environment.
