I teach special education and my students like to move. They will find any excuse to get some energy out by walking across my classroom and trying to disrupt learning. I want to create an flexible seating classroom that's more than just couches. I want it to fulfill the movement and sensory needs of my students in order to increase focus and maintain appropriate behavior throughout the day. My plan is to bring in cushions they can use at their regular desk or at a chair at a table. Stools and yoga balls help create options. Standing desks with taped off areas give my walkers a place to move their feet and focus on their work while creating boundaries so they won't disrupt instruction. Stretchy bands under desks give students a fidget for their feet. And they will learn to use it all appropriately. Giving students choices help them have ownership over their learning and easy consequences for their inappropriate decisions. Why doesn't everyone have a flexible seating classroom?
