Students who live in underprivileged, low SES and very rural areas do not frequently get the exposure to the world that helps them to build ideas, expand vocabulary and schema or understand other cultures. Technology can help students interact and communicate with others a world away in real time, sharing, ideas, making connections and building friendships. It can also provide the exposure to the world that many students are currently lacking. Our small school serves about ninety-two kindergarten through eighth grade students in a rural area of Northern New Mexico. We would like to purchase a large smart television so that we could use the technology to connect with classrooms in other schools. With this, we would be able to real time video whole classrooms and participate in learning opportunities across the globe. We would also have the ability to have large student groups use the smart TV to watch student news programming, documentaries on various topics, as well as live feeds from places like the international space station, Congress and the Smithsonian. We would place this smart TV in our multi-use space which serves as a cafeteria, meeting space and at times, classroom space for multi class activities.
