  • All in for 5th Grade Reading Materials!

    Funded Dec 11, 2024

Thank you so much for giving to my 5th grade classroom. Each one of you have helped out by providing my classroom with independent reading books that my students actually enjoy reading. Many of my students thrive on graphic novels and realistic fiction series, and because of you we were able to get Captain Underpants, Ivy & Bean, and Judy Moody. We were also able to get decodable books which help students practice their phonics skills. These decodable books are used during our morning work time, and I also provide them for homework practice.

Independent reading in our classroom usually happens 2 to 3 days a week after our reading mini lessons. My students have a chance to read the books they have chosen, and at the end they can browse our library if they want to change their books. Recently, they have become so much more excited with the new additions to our library. They love our new books, and are asking about reading them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Blumer

  • All In For 5th Grade School Supplies

    Funded Sep 18, 2024

Thank you so much for helping to fund my Donors Choose project, "All In For 5th Grade School Supplies." Your generous donation has helped our 5th grade class get essential school supplies such as markers, crayons, folders, glue sticks, and headphones.

We use these school supplies for every day things such as organizing materials, putting charts into our reading & math notebooks, listening to stories on our i-Pad, and completing lessons on our I-Ready math and ELA programs.

The students were so excited upon getting these materials. They knew that these materials were going to help our classroom be successful. They also knew that these materials were going to help our classroom be organized. As 5th graders, the students were also able to understand the concept that very generous people like you donated money so that these supplies could be given to us. They were very appreciative and were excited to create thank you notes.

In case you were curious, our class is reading non-fiction texts about natural disasters, writing an opinion piece about whether they would move away or rebuild during a natural disaster, and dividing multi-digit numbers. We hope to update you soon with a new Donors Choose project for the second half of our year.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Blumer

  • White Board Markers!

    Funded May 25, 2021

Thank you again for generously donating to my classroom. The white boards, markers, and erasers have been so helpful to my students this year. They were so excited to see the new materials and could not wait to start using them. They loved starting out 5th grade with clean new boards and magnetic erasers. We use them in math a lot for writing out multiplication equations and solving them. We also use them in math when students work together to solve a problem. This allows for them to have a joint space and it is large enough to share. In our class, students also use the white boards and markers in writing when they are getting their thoughts down before they go onto paper. We also use the boards to help spell out words and to break down multi-syllable words.

I am looking forward to posting a new classroom project in the upcoming months.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Blumer

  • Hear for the Technology!

    Funded Feb 24, 2021

Thank you SO much for contributing to my classroom project that brought new headphones to our classroom. In our 4th grade classroom, we use technology every day. With all students on programs, that means there is potential for LOTS of sounds. Can you imagine what that would be like if we did not have enough good headphones for students to plug in?

The new headphones that were funded from my Donors Choose project have been a hit in our class. First of all, students LOVE the colors of them. Second of all, they love how they can fold them up to pack them away. Third of all, students have quickly learned how to roll them up and place them in our organization shoe rack that was also funded by Donors Choose. Organization is so important during COVID 19. Any way to help students keep track of their individual materials is ideal for me.

All of my students have warmed to these new headphones. We have since added more students to our class who wish they had these headphones (we only have 12). That means there is a possibility for another Donors Choose project in the future.

    Thank you so much!!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Blumer

  • Step Into Our Classroom And Find a Great Book

    Funded Oct 16, 2019

Thank you so much for contributing to my project that brought so many wonderful books into my classroom. Over the past few months, my co-teacher and I have utilized the new books in our classroom to teach classroom library skills, to allow kids to grow in their reading, and to teach them lessons with books such as "What Should Danny Do?", and "What If Everybody Did That?" Even 4 months later, all students are still as eager to check out these books as they were in the middle of October when they just arrived.

In our classroom, reading takes place during free time. This could be time when students hang out in the classroom during lunch, when they finish their work early, or when they have a choice time. Sometimes students read on the carpet where our library is located, and sometimes students bring the book back to their table. Students are also encouraged to bring books home and read nightly so that they can continue to strengthen their reading skills.

Students in my classroom range from new readers to readers who are almost on or at grade level. The best part of this project was being able to support my new readers in the classroom with fun, high interest books that they are interested in and CAN read. These students enjoy picking books from our library such as Hop on Pop and Henry and Mudge just as much as the students who are reading Magic Tree House and Diary of a Wimpy Kid do. Thank you again for your support, and cheers to another successful project in the future!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Blumer

These books will help our students become avid readers. We want to create a class culture where independent reading is valued by encouraging students, even those who struggle with reading, to enter the reading life. Having a rich classroom library with books on a wide range of reading levels and diverse topics will promote this goal. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Third grade is a pivotal year for reading literacy because it is the final year children are learning to read, after which students are reading to learn. At this point in the school year, all students have tremendous room to grow across all academic areas. These books will give students opportunities to use their imagination, discover new interests, and gain more confidence. Please help us continue to build our classroom library and reach the interests of all readers. Help us to enhance the language-rich classroom that we strive to create!
