Right now I have 4 technology stations in my room, and the kids take turns using them when they arrive instead of morning work. Then, the station belongs to them for the day at center time as well! They watch as the clothespins inch closer and closer to their name for their turn! We use a program called Reflex Math, which has games that teach my first graders addition and subtraction facts. We give the students awards when they solve 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000 facts, and so on...and also keep track of their fluency in the program. When the child is 100% fluent, meaning they know ALL their facts, they get a crown that says "REFLEX ROYALTY" and get their picture on the wall in the main hallway! At the end of the year, all of the Reflex Royalty Kings and Queens get to go to a party just for them! Some children have the advantage of playing the game on their computer or iPad at home, but for some, I am the only opportunity they have. It's amazing how motivated they are to play! They all want to be 100% fluent and be "Royalty"! We have also discovered the most amazing free website code.org, where our first graders are writing multiple lines of code! The kids are coding their own dance parties! They code characters to dance to certain songs with chosen dance moves, backgrounds, background dancers in their own designed dance! But that is only the beginning! There are many popular coding games on the website including Minecraft, Frozen, Angry Birds, Star Wars and more! My class would go BANANAS if we had 2 more technology stations!! We are crazy about technology and learning! We'd love your help to give more kids the chance to be "Royalty"!
