Working Toward Stronger Mathematical and Fine-Motor Skills
Funded May 2, 2023A heartfelt thank you from my tiny classroom in a little school in a remote district in a small town in Southern Washington State!
I want to acknowledge the use of these lovely picture books. Each book supplies clear mathematical illustrations that lend perfectly to the content of each book. While I read and we discuss mathematical concepts, students see different types of illustrations. Teaching fourth grade covers a spectrum of mathematical practices. I have students who struggle with addition and students who understand decimals and fractions. The selection of books that I was gifted includes not only the basic operations but also concepts that push the thinking of those who are mathematically advanced. I've included a few photos of a book we used to understand fractions. The assignment was for students to come up with their equivalent fractions.
It was my goal to teach students how to be skilled 4th-grade watercolor artists. My goal was for them not to scrub the brushes into the paper, not to mix wet colors when rushing to add new colors and to be patient while their artwork dried before they added another layer. We were all successful! Each year I teach the life cycle of the Pacific Salmon. This year each student made each part of the life cycle – from egg to spawning adult. All but one stage was done in watercolor. The kids learned to be patient – the biggest watercolor challenge, and not scrub the brush into the paper – the second biggest watercolor challenge. Small hands are learning new skills!
Thank you all for being part of this educational process!
