My students are third graders in a 100 year old elementary school on the southside of Chicago. The student body is very diverse, academically, linguistically, culturally, and socio-economically. My class is one of three third grade classes. There are five languages and six neighborhoods represented in my classroom alone. We have a 120 minute reading instructional block, which includes some time for independent reading and book discussions/ literature circles. In addition, we have literacy throughout the day and integrated into every subject.
