Nightly access to stories which are read fluently in English will help develop the vocabulary, book language and sense of story necessary for our first graders who are having difficulty understanding and reacting to texts at their grade level. The books on CD will take the place of the traditional bedtime story and the portable, plug-in devices will allow children to easily transport them to school after their listening program is over. Older students often have access to online readings that are available on devices provided by the school but these devices are not available to our youngest readers. Additionally as children are first developing book language the stories must be within carefully guided levels so as to be comprehended fully. A program that will provide them with an engaging way to grow vocabulary will help to accelerate their progress in reading and writing. Each student recommended for the program will meet with a member of the reading team and a parent to set goals and review parent follow up options. All students will become members of the listening club and engage in book circles where appropriate sentence stems will be introduced to help structure their literacy conversations. Classroom teachers will help to plan activities and monitor progress after their daily classroom read alouds.
