Our district has adopted a new ELA curriculum, and their suggestion is to read novels throughout the school year to enhance the units of study. I have always read novels to my class and they absolutely love them! We have amazing discussions about different themes and lessons the author want us to take away. I choose this particular book, The One and Only Ivan, because it is told from the point of view of the gorilla, and the author does an amazing job and teaching compassion and empathy. These are characteristics that are vital with young adults. Please help me provide quality literature for my 4th graders to help instill these important life long lessons.
