  • Window and Mirror Novels

    These books have already made an impact in my room. I intended to use them during next year's choice reading book unit, but several of them have already been checked out by students (with firm promises to return them before Summer vacation). They saw the stack on my desk and several curious ones just couldn't help themselves.

    These student imitated moments of reading make my heart fill with wonder and considering how long I've been teaching that is quite an accomplishment.

  • Guess Who My Character Is

    The games have arrived and are being assembled! I created a temple to fit the images into the slots on the board and I'm currently working on getting 9 sets of the draw cards made. Once they've all be assembled my own little ones have graciously agreed to play each set with me so we can find in flaws which need to be addressed. I've loved the bonus mythological conversations I've had with my daughters as a result of this project.

    As for my students, our Greek unit is underway and we're currently reading our Prometheus story. The kids saw the giant box of games and were quite intrigued when they saw me cutting things out while they were working. For an activity that won't take long, I feel the level of anticipation there is on their part has made this well worth the effort.

  • Make Everyone a Reader

    Funded Nov 1, 2022

    We started our "genre study" unit for the quarter. It is student choice novel unit which allows the students to explore a genre with a group of their peers. We began this unit with a brief discussion of what makes each genre distinctive. After that, we had what is called a Book Tasting. Students choose three genres they which to explore, and they sit at a table group with a stack of books from that genre. This went over so well I had to restack the tables throughout the day because students wanted to take one of the books immediately. ALL of the novels you've bought them were chosen! A few were wanted by several students which drove them to the library (oh no!).

    As an entirely choice novel unit, the buy in and engagement has been incredible. I can't thank you enough for giving them more choices and increasing their desire to read.”
