The students at AVMS start using a scientific calculator in 7th grade and continue using them throughout 8th grade and into high school. However, these calculators cost anywhere from $10-$15. If the student does not purchase one of these calculators or have internet access at their home, then they do not have access to this type of calculator lowering their chances of success on certain assignments and activities. By using these calculators in the classroom, it can promote the higher-order thinking and reasoning skills needed for problem-solving. They can assist students in understanding concepts and fluency with arithmetic operations, algorithms, and numerical relationships and enhancing student motivation. On the very first day of school, I asked my students if they had their own personal scientific calculator, and unfortunately, many said no. Right now with the pandemic among us, if I let students use calculators I must disinfect them between every hour of the day. This is challenging! This wastes class time with my students and it is also extremely difficult to find the correct cleaning supplies at this time. This project would allow each of my students to have their own personal calculator that they can take with them home or in my classroom. This type of calculator can be used through high school and even college.
