For students with autism, school can be seen as aversive, but small prizes can provide great reinforcers to encourage students to participate in class. One of the biggest expenses I run into as a teacher is needing to purchase a wealth of small prizes and activities for my students to reward behavior. These are used daily in my classroom and frequently need to be replaced. Therefore, my classroom is set up around earning prizes, so for example, if a student successfully completes a worksheet, they can earn a small prize. This keeps my students motivated and working hard. It is so important for all students to learn that school is fun and something they can succeed in. Prizes such as yoyos, slime, and small toys, allow my students to see tangible rewards for their hard work and keep them excited to attend school. Additionally, students with autism often have rigid thinking and need lots of practice and prompting to engage with their creative thinking. Having small, fun activities to do with my students, such as fuse beads and stuffed animal sewing kits, will show my students that things don't have to be perfect and that life is more fun when they engage in creativity. All these materials would make a huge difference in the lives of my students and the efficiency of my classroom. Thank you in advance for considering our needs!
