NYC students love nature as much as anyone, but often struggle to connect to it. This project will allow students to truly connect with the waters of New England. Through planned activities with Project O and NESS, students will learn about marine life, factors that affect marine stability, and how to protect our waters. The students will be collecting real data that will be added to a database of marine health that began in 1972. The data is used to monitor abiotic factors such as salinity, temperature, dissolved oxygen, as well as the life in the New England Sound. At NESS, students will learn some intro sailing lessons and collect more data to analyze. Finally, at both organizations, students will participate in marine labs that are meant to foster curiosity in STEM and our waters. For example, students may be asked to discuss and design systems for dealing with the growing plastic problem in our waters, they may design the "perfect" sailboat, or they may learn about which characteristics of sea creatures are best adapted to where they fit in the food chain.
