My students thrive in our classroom and love having a choice in where they can sit. While, I do not follow a true flexible seating model my students use our flexible seating options during independent reading time and when working with a partner.
I created my classroom environment to help my students prosper and grow in their academic journey's and in their personal lives. I wanted my students to have choices within our classroom to promote ownership and to help us all learn more about ourselves and how we learn best. Choice is an incredibly powerful tool within education. In lower income schools it is often harder to fund these "extra" things because we are busy supply our students with basic necessities including clothes, shoes, coats, and school supplies throughout the entire year. However, I have made it a point to not let my students sacrifice these "extra" things because they have already given up so much.
Currently our classroom is in need of replacing yoga mats that have withstood the last 6 months and are showing dirt and grime. We are also in need of more wiggle seats as I would like for each group of tables to have one that rotates throughout the week. I have a VERY active group of kiddos who just can't sit still and with the elastic chair bands I can designate them for a few students who need them in order to maintain attention and focus while still moving around. I have a few stools however, I have been wanting two of the exercise ball chairs as another option for my wiggly students. Overall, I want a variety of seating choices so all of my students can have a favorable choice and ones that meet their individual needs.
