In this collaborative inquiry unit, the books requested will be used to help students develop inquiry skills and content area knowledge. The class will work in small groups to research how the California gold rush was started, the different routes used to get to California, the life of a miner, the effects on the economy and population after the gold rush, and an opinion piece on whether the student would go west to search for gold. Finally, students will choose an activity, such as an oral report, newspaper, or a brochure to teach what they have learned to the rest of the class or principal. Group accountability and individual responsibility will be built in to this lesson process. Working together on a shared goal leads to higher achievement than working alone. In groups, students will be able to collaborate and the focus will be on what the student learns. Also, in groups, students need to do something: communicate, organize, interpret, and apply. That is exactly what will happen in this lesson.
