These types of books are not only great for guided reading groups, but also allowing students who are older to read these independently. These books also have a wide variety of activities associated with them, such as using them to create a spelling list, going over phoneme and morpheme patterns, recognizing sight words, and trying to determine the beginning, middle, and end, as well as the moral of the story. The reason that I thought that Level M would be beneficial to my students is because it is right in the middle of the grade levels that I am teaching, so it can be a "reach" book for many of the younger students, and it can also be at instruction level for some of the older students who are struggling readers. It is also "just right" for many of the students that I provide supports for in 2nd grade.
