  • History by Comics

    Funded Aug 19, 2021

    Dear donors,

My classroom is in South Philadelphia High School and is considered ESOL, ELD, and English III. My students often have disabilities that require specialty book selections as well as other special needs.

My students have a strong desire to learn English and struggle with literacy needs. They require books that are considered 'High-lo' which means that they are high interest reading topics but have a lowered lexile score. Students who enjoy these types of books find a lot of confidence when they are able to enjoy the same topics as their peers, but on a level where they can read the information on their own.

Like most teachers, I have tried to provide a safe and caring environment with a varied assortment of reading materials and a comfortable classroom where they can achieve their literacy goals.

Most of the students attending have immigrated from other countries recently and have had some education in their origin country, but very little formal instruction in English. They all have a strong desire to be fluent in both reading and writing and I have exhausted my own financial means providing.

My students would enjoy a more in depth library that includes more High-low selections, graphic novels as well as non-fiction and fiction novels. I have seen so many read when it is not assigned if the books in their interest range are made available. That is the most gratifying as a teacher...when a student reads because they want to read and not because it was assigned.

I am looking for the 'right' books and materials for my students so that they can enjoy their education and their journey to be more literate in a language that is foreign to them.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Raub

  • Sprouting Food

    Funded Jan 1, 2020

My students were able to see and experience growing for themselves an indoor garden that provides cheap and nutritious meals without having an outdoor gardening space. This was done by soaking the seeds, planting in trays with paper, and covering them with a water spritz every day until they grew.

The sprouts were then cleaned and prepared for long term use in the refrigerator and used in various salads and wraps as examples of how to store and use sprouted seeds that you grow yourself and without sunlight or soil.

Care of such a sprout garden is low and does not require much in the way of nature the way an outdoor garden, but the impact is just as nutritious and rewarding. Thank you for the opportunity!”

  • Bean Soup and Hummus

    Funded Nov 9, 2019

My students used everything that this project provided when we made hummus. We were also able to make a small sample of a bean soup for each student to try.

The reaction from my students when they saw the supplies was excited! They could not wait to participate in the entire cooking lesson. They particularly enjoyed flavoring the humus with spices and cutting the vegetables to use for the dip.

My students are currently learning financial literacy but as a reward for finishing this lesson as a whole, they will learn how to make pizza dough and then onto full pizza's.

This class has been a great experience for me and the students and any and all donations are a valuable contribution to the success of a brand new Family and Consumer Science Program.”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Raub

My students will learn how to grow their own food from seeds, grains and legumes which is inexpensive and healthy. Each student will grow their own sprouts to use in a dish they create. The mung beans will be grown by students and used in a ramen dish as well as a salad. The salad bean sampler will be used in dishes they create after learning to develop their own nutritionally balanced recipe including cooking techniques. They will care for their seeds every day in class until they reach growth appropriate for cooking. In most cases, the maturation rate of the seeds is 6-14 days.
