Literacy Project Based Learning
Funded Jan 26, 2023My students and I have tremendous gratitude and appreciation for donors' kindness and generosity when they choose to give towards our classroom materials! These novels and materials have had such an incredible impact on my students' lives. My students have no wasted time in class and can pick up a book of their choosing to read when work has been completed.
They say that a great moment in teaching students to read is when they read without an assignment or a promised grade. I believe that with your generosity, our classroom has that opportunity and students will avail themselves of all the materials you have thus provided. I look forward to seeing students reading novels of their own choosing!
The new books have sparked a flame in my students to read and LOVE to read. The new books are so exciting and full of color. Donors you will never know how much you have impacted my classes! Students are completely engaged in reading which is not always an easy task for a teacher. Students love the selections and are looking forward to their next selection in our beginning classroom library. I am looking forward to an increase this year in Literacy at this Title 1 school!”

Funded Apr 1, 2021Dear donors,
My classroom is in South Philadelphia High School and is considered ESOL, ELD, and English III. My students often have disabilities that require specialty book selections as well as other special needs.
My students have a strong desire to learn English and struggle with literacy needs. They require books that are considered 'High-lo' which means that they are high interest reading topics but have a lowered lexile score. Students who enjoy these types of books find a lot of confidence when they are able to enjoy the same topics as their peers, but on a level where they can read the information on their own.
Like most teachers, I have tried to provide a safe and caring environment with a varied assortment of reading materials and a comfortable classroom where they can achieve their literacy goals.
Most of the students attending have immigrated from other countries recently and have had some education in their origin country, but very little formal instruction in English. They all have a strong desire to be fluent in both reading and writing and I have exhausted my own financial means providing.
My students would enjoy a more in depth library that includes more High-low selections, graphic novels as well as non-fiction and fiction novels. I have seen so many read when it is not assigned if the books in their interest range are made available. That is the most gratifying as a teacher...when a student reads because they want to read and not because it was assigned.
I am looking for the 'right' books and materials for my students so that they can enjoy their education and their journey to be more literate in a language that is foreign to them.”
