Our students really like being outside and getting dirty. They love growing flowers, herbs, fruit and vegetables. We have a small amount of ground in our city so we use large pots, grow vines on our fences and use a donated rolling garden to increase our area to grow plants outside. The students get to choose what they want to grow, and help take care of the plants and critters in my classroom. We put cut flowers in the main offices. We have even given seeds to people that work in our community who admire our garden and plants. We eat what we grow and students take home food, too!
My classroom is set up so that students can love to explore the world around them. We have critter viewers, a worm farm, 4 fish tanks, a potato clock, many many house plants, avocado plants, butterfly houses, shells, rocks, and all sorts of books and resources. The kids get to see our fish and snails reproduce. We have a new baby platy almost everyday. They get to see genetics, biodiversity and ecosystems at work. We have lots of aquatic plants that can be used for many lessons about cells, living things, and photosynthesis. I produce my own videos for my educational YouTube channel. Sometimes I am out in nature, in my backyard, in my classroom, or in our garden. I also Tweet and print pictures of our activities and successes. I try to instill a sense excitement about being curious and exploring our world.
We also like to have fun! Myself and other teachers take students out there for recess and free time. We bring sidewalk chalk, yoga mats, blankets, stuffed animals and games outside.
