The typical ELL student enters the classroom with zero or minimal English skills. Although they are part of the ELL program in the district, there is only 1 person per building to assist the students within that building. This means that students often spend up to 80% of their day without any assistance while regular instruction is going on around them. Not being able to understand the language, the time spent in the classroom is not nearly as productive as it could be. There are also times when the unit being taught incorporates personal experiences that our ELL students do not have due to cultural differences. Being able to visually see the topic being taught or experience a new topic will help give the ELL student a better understanding of what is going on and encourage them to use their language (even if limited) to express their understanding and ideas. This will also give the classroom teacher a better idea of what the ELL student comprehends without the issue of linguistic differences.
