Having the ability to move while learning has been proven to increase engagement and retention. My students learn best in a comfortable, safe environment. By offering alternative seating students will be able to focus and complete assignments and projects. The multiple alternative seating opportunities; including standing desks, wobble disks, and chairs that move, will improve our classroom engagement by increasing student strength and stability and allowing for movement to help students stay on task. Students' increased engagement and ability to focus will result in academic success. The ability to have kinesthetic movement throughout the class period helps students focus and process information. Students with emotional and behavioral issues respond to flexible seating options because it gives them the choice of where they work and with whom. It also allows them to change their location and positions as needed. Students feel empowered by having some degree of choice and control over their environment and increases their academic success.
