Far too often my class, which is comprised of mostly African American students, are subjected to reading texts provided by the state. These texts are not culturally significant and a majority of the texts are written by white authors about white characters. Studies have shows students are more engaged in reading when they can connect to the characters. I will use these stories throughout the year as read-alouds. Some of the books I have chosen are written by a favorite children's book author Jacqueline Woodson. Woodson writes books true to the African American experience in America. Her books are written with love and you can truly tell through the poetic structure of her literature. In past classes her stories have brought my children to tears because she was able to directly connect with my students through words. Many of the other books I have chosen are Coretta Scott King award winners. The Coretta Scott King Book Awards are given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values. Students will be pushed to think and respond to the texts, make connections, and be inspired to love books.
