Reading for Renewal
Funded Dec 7, 2024I want to extend my deepest gratitude to your donation which provided my amazing students with a class set of Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. Your generosity has made a significant impact on their learning experience. Throughout our reading of the book, we focused on key skills such as characterization, and students eagerly engaged with activities like the "character autopsy," which allowed them to dive deep into her psychological and emotional layers. We also explored the book's structure, understanding how it was told through flashbacks and divided into three sections, which encouraged the students to think critically about narrative structure. Additionally, they examined character FOILS—how Eleanor's interactions with characters like Raymond helped highlight her growth and development. One of the most powerful aspects of this book was its focus on mental health, a theme that resonated deeply with my students. As a final project, they created one-pagers—a visual and symbolic response to the text—that allowed them to express their understanding creatively and meaningfully.
Your support has not only provided my students with the tools to engage in these critical analyses but has also inspired them as they approach their graduation and college preparation. These books were gifted to a group of hardworking, low-income students who are striving for success, and thanks to your kindness, they had the chance to engage with a story that will shape their perspectives and conversations for years to come. Thank you again for your incredible generosity!”

Publishing with Pride
Funded Oct 31, 2019The new printer has been a wonderful addition to our writing lab. The lab has been busy with students typing and editing their essays, completing projects, and doing research for various classes. We had so many students visiting the lab recently as they wrapped up work for the 1st quarter and prepared for 2nd quarter.
Students are so excited that they no longer have to search around the school for a printer once they are done typing their essays. Typically, I am assisting students until the bell so when they had to find a printer, this would often make then late to their next class and it would also cut down on the time we could work. Now, they are able to print their work and be prepared for their next class. We are thankful for the convenience this printer has granted us!
Your generosity is incredibly appreciated. Have a wonderful holiday and thank you for supporting Chicago's students!”

Comfortable Collaboration: An Alternative Space to Read and Discuss Literature
Funded Mar 6, 2019My students were incredibly excited when they entered my classroom and saw the new furniture, and they could not believe how quickly the items arrive. They immediately wanted to test out the new pieces! All of the them have perfectly filled the large space in my classroom, and the bright colors make my room more inviting. Students could not wait to try out the new chairs or table, and since receiving the new items, all have been used daily.
This week, the items were especially helpful for literature circles in my post-apocalyptic class. The seniors have recently started reading a high interest text called Infected by Scott Sigler. Each group member was assigned a different role and one group was able to use the table for their discussion. One student in this group used to the table to visually summarize the text to a group member who was confused. Other students enjoyed the ability to move a bit on the stools while they did their work, which helped keep them engaged despite sitting all day. The bungee chairs have been especially popular because they are surprisingly comfortable and make excellent reading chairs. Beginning next week, students will be working on a creative film project related to several themes in the text. They will write their own scripts, and the table will assist them in the brainstorming stage of the project.
It's been awesome to give my students options for choosing a place in the room where they can learn best. Thank you for making this a reality!”

Mrs. Seeberg
