For the past 9 months, I have been carrying a canvas bag back and forth to this school site to teach creative writing and art at the after school enrichment program. My supplies are limited, but my imagination is HUGE! With high quality supplies and a wide variety of textiles, display materials, and mediums, the students will be able to consistently channel their creativity into rigorous project based learning displays.
As I join the staff full-time as an English teacher and creative writing/arts teacher, we will be delving into arts integration school wide, and will build a learning gallery to share our work with pride. Beyond what I carry in my canvas bag, the students are in need of the materials that will allow them to channel their inner artist, their inner makers and creators. What may seem like simple materials, paper and markers, are often absent from your typical high school classroom. Students and their families are often expected to make runs to the store for poster boards, glue, etc. every time a project is due--which can result in many kids not completing a project at all due to lack of funds or transportation. Thematic units will culminate with creative projects meant to be shared and presented to family and community.
Students will build a multitude of academic and social skills as they engage in performing and visual arts, and learn the power of creation and community. Left brain and right brain will work in tandem while students use voice and choice to determine the medium or style that best captures their understanding and newfound knowledge.
