These East Harlem students in are in high need of technology experience! As a first time member, I need 6 Chromebooks for my 4th graders to gain basic computer skills, and beyond, by the end of the year. There are only 4 available computers along with 5 iPads for my 25 students. I teach a 4th grade class at a Title I elementary school in the heart of El Barrio at East Harlem, NY. Our school serves classes from Pre-K up to 5th grade. 43% of the students are English Language Learners. 34% are coded as Students with Special Needs. In my 4th grade classroom, 72% students are English Language learners and 42% are students with Individualized Education Plans. The Chromebooks are to be used in English Language Arts and Mathematics Instruction by assigning reading comprehension assignments. In ELA students will be able to complete reading comprehension tasks. We would also be able to create a more engaging mathematics learning environment. During our station work, we can expose them to online learning that would create independence in task completion. In February, we celebrated Black History month by researching African American persons that have inspired change in American Society. As the culminating project, my students wrote diary entries as if they were the person they investigated. This project was very successful not only in exposing my students to the use of computers but it also made their learning process more wholesome. After they worked on the project, my co-teacher and I would look through the document and leave feedback. We thought, "how awesome would it be if all students can work on their documents at the same time?!" Please help us give these students the education they deserve.
