  • Art Students Create, Frame, and Share!

    Funded Apr 21, 2022

Thank you so much for helping us to display our students' artwork through out the school. With these frames, our students can practice the career of museum and gallery exhibition display. Additionally, students understand the importance of their creative ideas by having their artwork displayed around the campus. And ALL students and staff throughout the school will be inspired by the cool art they see!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Carver

  • Fantastic Books for Bilingual Newcomers

    Funded May 14, 2019

Thank you so much for funding the bilingual English/Spanish books for our English Learner students! Each day, after lunch, our school has an "SSR" (Silent Sustained Reading). In the past, our recent immigrant students did not have much to select from.

Now, thanks to your donation, they can choose from a wide variety of books at appropriate reading levels for each student. The Spanish /K'iche speakers in my class requested that I try to order books that show the English next to the Spanish (concurrently translated) so that they could learn English faster. One of my students is Philipino and does not speak Spanish. But he is taking a Spanish class and the bilingual books are perfect for him to learn Spanish.

Thanks again for your generosity! Our classroom library has been "upgraded" to meet my students' needs, and the books are read on a daily basis!”

    With gratitude,

    Ms. Carver

My classroom has a small library for students to choose books to read during our “Silent Reading” time after lunch each day. Unfortunately, we have a very small selection of books in Spanish. I have 8 students who have been reading this same small collection for weeks. Many of these students spent time in detention camps before coming to our school, so they really do not have access to books at home. To me, this is an issue of equity and access to the curriculum for ALL students regardless of language ability. One of my students said the books that are most helpful for him are those that have concurrent translation (both Spanish and English side by side on the page). This would also benefit all 27 students who are currently taking Spanish class. Knowledge of their first language also helps my students strengthen family relations through bilingual communication.
