With a largely caucasian community of learners, my students are rarely exposed to deeper learning about the African American community. I have been using the novel, Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor for many years now to great effect. However, my set of novels is a dilapidated hodgepodge of editions published by 5 different publishers printed beginning in 1984 to 1997. Most are at the point that taping, gluing, and recovering does little to preserve the books further. The ratty condition of the books is very unappealing to the students, the different page numbers and occasional missing pages make it very difficult to facilitate instruction and discussion in the classroom. Regardless, I have found this novel to be very powerful and engaging once students delve into not only the powerful, rich literary quality of the story. Through this novel my students see a different perspective about common adolescent concerns and the importance of examining their own values and beliefs that may consciously or unconsciously affect their choices and actions. The come to better understand that there is value and strength in diversity.
