Students with unique abilities are rarely provided the opportunity to participate in a standard art curiculum because their academic program often focuses on the basics: reading, writing, math, communication, and life skills. Working with students with unique abilities for 17 years, I have come to realize that my students learn best through the use of visuals, repetition, and "hands-on" activities. Having a background in the Arts, I have been providing many opportunities for my students to explore "hands-on" learning activities using various art mediums such as drawing using colored pencils, pens, pastels, and charcoal; painting using watercolor and acrylics; creating mosaics, quilts, and murals (current project) just to name a few, but now I would like them to explore creating pottery using a pottery wheel. I want them (and others) to experience and explore the magic of what their hands and a slab of spinning clay can create.
