We live in Reno, nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada Mountains- not far from stunning Lake Tahoe. Many of our students have little or no opportunity to explore nature in their backyard.
We have three upper elementary classes that wish to attend science camp at beautiful Lake Tahoe. The students will experience meaningful, hand on learning focused on nature. The students will stay in cabins, play games, and take part in meal preparation. It is our hope that each child will be able to take part in this amazing opportunity regardless of their family's ability to pay.
Great Basin Outdoor School provides curriculum that is specifically designed for elementary-age students in an outdoor setting, by experienced natural science educators. The camp provides cabins, a dining hall, and gorgeous property to explore.
At least 17 of our students are from families who receive some form of public assistance. We know many of our families struggle financially, and could not afford $150 for science camp. Our close knit community of students depends on all students participating in all activities. $1000 in scholarship money would partially or completely fund 10 students in my class. Our hope is to raise enough in scholarships, through project applications to fund 10 students from each of the 3 upper elementary classes. Families will apply for scholarships, and indicate how much they are able to pay. With this money, every child who wishes to attend science camp, will be able to, and our students will have an experience to remember for a lifetime.
