As an adult, although I have a dedicated office space and office furniture at home, I find myself on my couch, recliner slightly engaged, as I accomplish my teaching tasks and researching my craft. If I, a 43-year-old woman, wife and mother of 3, am more comfortable learning and completing tasks in an "alternate" seating accommodations . . . maybe, just maybe, my kiddos will be too. As middle school kiddos, they are already battling the transition from the elementary setting (1 teacher throughout the day; same peers in each class; no class period transitions) to the middle school setting (significant increase in number of students; 6-7 class period transitions; no recess; no permanent desks to store materials; 47 minute class periods; rotating schedules, etc). The transition to middle school is significant for most students, but can greatly impact academic success for students with processing deficits and other disabilities such as ADD and ADHD. The traditional classroom set-up/ furniture can be restrictive to these students. Thus, Give Us Flexible Seating or Give Us Anxiety. Please help me make a difference for these kiddos. Your benevolence is greatly appreciated.
