New Books!
Funded Jan 30, 2023As a literacy teacher, I think about reading education on a scale. At first you are learning how to read, but after a while you're reading to learn. Once that change happens, it's key to find books that interest students. If they don't have access to books they're interested in, they won't read. We all do our best work when we're motivated and engaged!
Another key for student achievement in literacy is having access to books that act as both "windows" and "mirrors". "Mirrors" are books with main characters and stories that students see themselves in. They are able to relate to the characters and situations, which boosts their motivation and engagement. "Windows" are books that show students opportunities, situations, and futures they may not have been exposed to. Windows may inspire students to set out on a new learning or life journey. It might spark an idea that leads to a lifelong passion or career. It could have them thinking, "Hey, I could do that!" Thank you for donating and giving my students the opportunity to fall in love with reading.”

A Bin is a House for a Book
Funded Aug 12, 2022My sixth graders do not spend the entire day in my room. Due to this fact they need a spot to house the books they're reading! Your generosity has provided them with that spot. Most proficient and avid readers have a book "on deck". As a teacher I'm always coming back to the question, "Is this going to help my students become lifelong readers?" That's my compass and these book boxes are an excellent way to get into the practice of having the next book ready to go.
My students haven't had book boxes in a while, so they were so excited to see them! Last year they had to share big plastic bins with 3 other classmates. These book boxes are all their own and they're pumped!
Currently my students are finishing their memoirs and we are reading "The Underground Abductor" by Nathan Hale as a class. It's a biography about the life of Harriet Tubman and it's a graphic novel to boot! My sixth graders love graphic novels, so it's a great motivator anytime I can incorporate them into our day. Thank you again for your generosity and know that you have made a positive impact on our classroom community.”

Books My Students Will Love!
Funded Dec 16, 2019Thank you so much for your generosity! These books have allowed my students to see themselves represented in the pages. Identifying with characters in a book can spark a love of reading for a lifetime. We have not had money for new classroom libraries in a very long time. Due to this lack of funding our books were very outdated and the students were reluctant to give these books a chance. In my class we run a readers workshop. That means that I give a 10 to 15 minute lesson on a skill. Or I might do a read aloud for 15 minutes where we can think deeply about a book together. After that the students apply what they've learned while reading their individual books. That's where having these new books come in handy! During this time I conference with small groups of students and other groups run their own book clubs that meet once a week. At the end of class we circle up on the rug and reflect on our learning for the day. There are some especially reluctant readers in my class and these books have turned them into engaged readers. Some of them read below grade level, but the graphic novels give them a chance to access books that look like the books their peers are reading. Your donation has literally transformed our classroom. Thank you so much!!!”
