My students' backgrounds are very ethnically diverse. I sometimes feel like I am teaching at the United Nations. Over 35 languages are spoke amongst our school community. It is truly amazing. One thing they have in common is that they are poor. Another more important commonality is their love of learning. They read for the joy and love of reading. The average child reads 4 books a week and visits the library at least twice a week. As a school system we are unable to purchase classroom sets of books. A set of the Lightning Thief would make a huge impact on my students.
