I am asking for 5 Chromebooks to help my students stay motivated and to reach their individualized reading goals. My students deserve equal access to technology that works. Our school is a STEM school; however, access to technology is limited. I currently have 4 desktop computers in my classroom. However, only 3 of them work and the others are painfully slow. I plan to use the laptops for guided reading. Scholastic offers an online program entitled Storia. It is a comprehensive eBook collection for the classroom. It offers all of the guided reading levels I need to accommodate the many lexile levels in my classroom. In addition, the program will allow me to quickly analyze individual progress and to identify students who need extra support to reach their goals.
In addition to individualized reading instruction, access to technology in the classroom will allow my students to master abilities such as problem-solving skills, critical thinking skills and digital literacy. It will allow my students to access iReady (interactive, adaptive technology that meets students where they are and challenges them to the next level), Common Lit, Newsela, Reading A-Z, Edulastic and more. It will allow them to conduct research, to find their voice in writing, and to take ownership of their learning. Furthermore, it will enable my students to become competent consumers of the media. Finally, it will allow my students the opportunity they need to be successful with high stakes testing. As students are required to respond to multiple texts, visuals, and videos through timed typed responses and technology enhanced questions, they must be offered consistent, repeated practice. Having computers in the classroom to engage students in high-quality guided reading instruction and in centers that promote agency over learning, my students will be able to navigate the constantly changing world!
