I teach fourth grade for the San Antonio Independent School District (SAISD). I teach at a south side, Title I, elementary school (Colins Garden) where most of my students come from low-income households. This leaves many of our teachers providing supplies, incentives and even uniforms to those who cannot afford them. The students in my class are a diverse group ranging from regular ed, dyslexic, and special education. The count in my class usually ranges between 15-20 students, sometimes more. In recent education, us teachers have been faced with having to adjust ourselves, as well as our students, to the joy of online learning. A project I feel would benefit my students, would be to provide my students with E-readers (tablets), specifically for reading. Since E-readers look a lot like paper and rely on e-ink screens to let you read for long periods of time, it is easy on the eyes. I can also easily disinfect them upon each use, especially if provided with screen protectors or cases. Having to quarantine books in the classroom after they have been read, is unfortunate since students want to read a book right after it has been used by another student, but they have to wait several days for safety reasons. An E-reader would allow for quick access of the books for my students and since the world is moving in the direction of electronics, this would be a great addition to our classroom. I would love to be able to provide my students with an alternative to books and the new age reading devices!
