When teaching how to be mindful of ethical considerations in the medical field, it is important that I address injustices that occurred in the past in order for us to learn from them. It is essential to teach in a way that is culturally responsive and aware. The story of Henrietta Lacks is a story of injustice and unethical practices rooted in racism and sexism. The story of Henrietta Lacks and her contributions to science is an important one, and very relevant to my curriculum and students. The novels requested will be an invaluable resource for my classroom. The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is definitely a missing piece of our classroom library!
