Among the classes that I teach, I have Life Skills/Special needs classrooms that I see on a weekly basis. I'm looking for creative ways to advocate for these students and help provide opportunities for integration. We are going to create a clay-based mural to illustrate that learning belongs to everyone. It will feature silhouettes of individuals of different ages, ethnicity and ability (The photo above is a concept sketch for this project). The work on this project will primarily be my Life Skills classes with assistance of volunteer students from other classrooms. Students will create clay pieces that will be cut into silhouettes, fired in a kiln and decorated with ceramic glaze. This project is designed to involve students of a variety of abilities by providing different roles and objectives. Some will explore the properties and texture of clay, some will learn about the human form and others will practice communicating as a team on a group project. We have some clay to begin development of this project, but are in need of ceramic glaze and materials to mount and display this mural. We hope to be able to permanently install this work in our school at the end of the school year.
