A photojournalist needs the right tools to capture the best moments of the story. A camera is only as good as the lens it uses, and we established a good base with a smart entry-level camera body that we use for our print and digital publications. However, the lenses that come with those camera bodies have their limitations in our gym, our hallways, and our classrooms, so the photos we take in those spaces tend to be satisfactory at best. Our publications students want to improve their photography skills by expanding the range of lenses in our inventory. These lenses will help our students focus on portrait photography as well as increase the quality of their action shots. The 50mm "Nifty Fifty" lens allows plenty of light in, which helps in our darker classrooms and hallways. The 24-70mm lens allows students to zoom into the action without sacrificing light quality, which means our indoor sports shots look just as crisp as our outdoor sports. Using these lenses will help our publications students understand that (especially when it comes to photography) one size does not fit all, so they get to practice and learn how to select the right tools for the job.
