  • Where?...Where...To Put The Books?

    Funded Aug 26, 2019

Thank you for your kind generosity! The students and I greatly appreciate your financial contribution towards our classroom. I know that you have a choice when it comes to where you place your money. Thank you for choosing to help the students in room D117 at Meadow Lane.

Books are an invaluable part of the learning experience for all children. Thankfully, as the year progresses, each child's need changes. Students need progressively more challenging books in their hands. By providing our classroom with bookshelves, you have made it simple and straight forward for the students to access books on their right level.

In addition to making it easy for students to access the books, students are also able to see first hand the benefits of organization with the book cases. Organization is a life skill. You are helping my students learn this skill. Thank you so very much for sharing your resources to make things better for the students in room D117.”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Grady

  • Opening the World Through Reading

    Funded Feb 28, 2019

Thank you very much for "Opening the World Through Reading" for my students! The books you funded have benefited the students in a multitude of ways and I fully expect next years students (and students thereafter) to reap the benefits from these books as well. Students were disappointed when we completed From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. This is always a positive sign that students thoroughly enjoyed a book. They did!

From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler provided students the opportunity to learn about the mystery genre. They learned what constitutes a mystery and how to analyze a mystery. They were challenged to think about how the clues may or may not fit together. Additionally, students had the back drop of the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the book, which meant they were introduced to artists and different historical time periods. By the end of the book words and names including "sarcophagus", "Renaissance", and "Michelangelo" were rolling off of their smiling third grade tongues. The students were pleased with their knowledge and it was impressive to see them break apart the story. Throughout the reading, the students also examined assorted figurative language from hyperbolas to personification.

Amal Unbound is currently having an impact on my students. They are making comparisons between their lives and the life of Amal and her family and friends. My students are also getting a geography lesson while reading this book; they now know where Pakistan is located and what other countries are in the same vicinity as Pakistan. This is helping my students to have greater empathy for others.

Thank you again for "Opening the World Through Reading" for my students!”

    With gratitude,

    Mrs. Grady

Reading enables my students to learn about parts of the world both abroad and on domestic soil that they can not easily visit. Third grade is a time when students typically transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn". My students have successfully made the transition and they are ready to go! The book, "Amal Unbound" will take my students to Pakistan. They will have the opportunity to learn about what some of life is like there. Specifically, they will learn about servitude and freedom. While reading the novel, supplemental non-fiction readings will also be used to further help students understand more about this region of the world. The book, "From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler is another novel that will open the world to my students. This book, will take my students to New York City, specifically, the Metropolitan Museum of Art. While reading about the adventures of Claudia and Jamie in the museum and the works of art they see, supplemental materials will be used to show the students these works of art. I team teach with another teacher. Our approach is to group the students in both classes so that lessons can be delivered on the appropriate level for the group. Each student will need a book in his/ her hands to help them with the reading and social studies content. Students benefit tremendously when more senses are engaged. Holding the the books engages the tactile sense, while reading along engages the visual sense and hearing others engages the auditory sense. Please help bring the world to my students! Thank you!
