My 9/10th grade students at SFIHS are all recent immigrants and English learners. This is the first year they have had to overcome many technological barriers and learning curves in distance learning. We are fortunate enough to have the district provide us with chromebooks and mobile hotspots, but many of our students still do not have the necessary know-how or financial ability to create an environment at home for learning. Many of our students live in smaller apartments and studios with family members who are spending more time at home due to COVID-19 and unemployment. Often, they try to learn amidst the sounds and motions of life happening at home. Some of them even spend their entire school day on their bed, bent over their chromebooks because they don't have room for a proper desk. It is truly a logistical challenge for them to find an environment conducive for learning. Although I cannot build a separate room for each student, simple computer accessories (like a pair of headphones, laptop desk, and a mouse) would help them better focus on learning and engaging in the classroom. By donating to our project, you will provide accessories that could construct a better learning environment where my students can cultivate the essential academic, socioemotional, and linguistic skills they need to succeed in this country. With your support, students will be able to focus more on engaging with each other and content material, rather than trying to actively filter out the discomfort of their less than ideal environment.
