Starting last year, I decided to implement project-based learning in my classes. I have tried to use this approach to learning at every level I teach from the AP to the introductory level. I realize my students love it and are learning so much more than lectures and even labs can deliver. I would like to keep this trend going and include several more projects at all levels. In my AP Physics courses, I would like to add a maglev vehicle project where the students design and build propeller-driven maglev carts. We have a maglev track from our science team, but I currently do not have the motors, gearing, and propellers to accomplish the project. I started a small vehicle project in my Academic Physics course last year, and it would be great to be able to offer electronic-driven vehicles as well so that students who normally would not be exposed to electronics could have that experience. Finally, in my STEM Lab course, students are being introduced to Arduino microcontroller systems. As an end of the course project, students are asked to develop a device "to improve the lives of those around them." This is a very open concept, and there will be unique products. I want to have motors and gearing available for this project so that students can implement these into their products. All these projects will enhance our students' learning and allow them to experience concepts not covered in other courses.
