The books I've selected for the LGBTQ+ stories unit will be for students to read in order to understand concepts such as, diversity, respect, acceptance, tolerance, love and self appreciation. On the first day, I will read to my students the book I've selected entitled, "They She He Me: Free to Be! and pink is for boys" in order to introduce the topic of diversity and respect. Then, students will write a 5 sentence reflection on their ideas about the book and the power of language and how our words can make someone feel happy, sad, comfortable, validated and appreciated.
After, in our class circle students will share their ideas and reflection on the power of language and and how our words impact people's lives ( feel happy, sad, comfortable, validated and appreciated) based on the book "They She He Me: Free to Be! and pink is for boys". Students will engage in a 3 day activity entitled, "Our book club" in which students will read a book of their choice a day from our library (the books I've selected here). They will be assigned to work in groups of 4 and share their daily written reflections with their groups.
On the fourth and fifth day, students will discuss and begin to prepare a presentation that encapsulates their experiences reading the books they chose, incorporate parts of their written reflections and how they felt sharing with their group. On the sixth day, each student will write a one page reflection demonstrating how they understand the power of language and how our words impact our identities and daily lives using ideas and terms they learned from the unit and referencing to the books they read. On our final day, we will engage in a class circle to talk about our learning.
