Reading Drives Growth
Funded Oct 22, 2021Thank you so much for donating to my project. The students were so excited and surprised when the box of books arrived at our classroom. As we opened the box, all student's faces looked as if it was Christmas morning! So many books have already been in the hands of students and already finished! In the entire school, we are also in the lead for the most read books in our "Red Carpet Reads" competition. This is so exciting! As a newer teacher, it is so exciting that I can make this impact on my students and the school. Thank you again for your support and donation! It means everything!”

This classroom project was brought to life by Dollar General Literacy Foundation and 3 other donors.Diverse Novels
Funded Nov 12, 2020With these great books, I will be sure to use them to inspire/ encourage a passion and love for reading in my classroom. I conduct a 25 book challenge each year for my students and urge them to read as much as they possibly can. Data and research has proven the more reading a student does, the more successful they are in my life and in academics. Not only is reading something that I personally spend a lot of time find enjoyment in, I am able to create meaningful conversations and memories with my students while we read these books. Thank you for helping me make an impact on my students lives.”

Funded Aug 11, 2021Thank you so much for donating to this project. I wish you were able to see the faces of my students as we opened a package in our classroom. We were so excited to immediately label the box and place them in my classroom library, however, they didn't stay there very long because so many students were thrilled to get them in their hands and start to read them. Thank you for reaching out and helping spread the passion and love for reading. Not only will these books help inspire students currently in my classroom, but it will continue in the next coming years. Thank you again for your donation.”

More Books to Encourage Passionate, Lifelong Readers in our Classroom!
Funded Feb 12, 2019Some of the skills or lessons introduced by these new texts:
With the books that were provided to my classroom, my students have been able to participate in small reading groups of four or five students. During small reading groups, students have been able to have productive, strategy-building discussions about the concepts and dialogue in the novel. I have lead mini-lessons about teamwork, finding text evidence, summarizing, character analysis, etc. to help enhance their small group reading. These books have fostered lots of learning in my classroom, and my students and I are very thankful.
What does reading look like in my classroom:
Meeting the needs of all of my classroom readers is not a small task. My class is full of developing readers, nonreaders, and students who read at 6th or 7th-grade levels. My class addresses the various needs of my students learning with differentiated instruction. I implement diagnostic assessments to help identify students' reading strengths and weaknesses. I use the results of the evaluations to form small groups of students with similar needs and plan instruction to target those needs. Typically, this means implementing reading instruction in small groups as well as whole class formats. Book clubs/small groups allow students to learn from another and for myself to reach more individualized student needs. If you were to walk into my classroom during our reading time, you would see lots of small group and independent reading occurring with specific goals and learning growth.
Particular students who are especially enjoying the new books:
All of my students have utilized the books that were donated. Students share the books and have continuously read them since the arrival date. Students will continue to use them in the future, and more learning will occur.
Thank you for your donation and for helping my students reading levels grow!”
With gratitude,
Ms. Taus
