My students are in need of engaging and relevant reading materials. As a first year teacher, I don't have a large classroom library. What I do have are hand-me-downs from retired teachers, which are still great books but newer material would help me reach even my most reluctant readers. This project consists of books that include racially diverse characters, female leaders, historical fiction, nonfiction narratives, books about video games, characters with disabilities, and so on. These books vary greatly, as do my students. If I can even help one student feel more accepted in the classroom or gain excitement about reading, because they related to a character or situation in one of these books, then this whole project would be very much worth it.
