In my classroom, I have created a self-paced learning environment. This year was my first year testing out such an educational model and I love it! The reason for testing this methodology out is the fact that over the years, I have continued to learn that students all learn in different ways and at different paces. So to counteract that, I have created digital lesson plans with video lessons and tasks for students to follow and complete at a pace that is suitable for their own learning style. This year has gone extremely well and I have concluded that this is how I am going to conduct my classroom next year. However, I share a computer cart with 2 other teachers and most students do not have the ability to bring their own device to school. Although this has proven to be a valid learning style, it is not possible year-round without my own computers. My goal is to attain a class set of 30 Chromebooks and a Chromebook cart that my students will utilize next school year. With the advancements of technology and the fact that our students are digital natives, funding should be the reason students are held back from the enhancement that technology can bring to their educational endeavors. This self-paced environment for learning has proved to teach students so much more than just the math curriculum. See what some of my students have said about it below: "Self-paced learning has forced me to work on time management and not be lazy." "This style of learning has taught me to persevere when I am struggling and and figure out mistakes on my own" Help me enhance my students' learning experience!
