Our students attend media class every week, and many of them visit the library outside of class multiple times a day. While our space is older, our program is practically new due the the long time absence of a media coordinator in the school. We are undergoing a lot of transitions and we need a few items in order to make these transitions successful. By contributing to our school library, you will be giving my students a chance to improve literacy skills and independence, while also helping us provide a library program that benefits everyone in our school community. An obvious benefit of beanbag chairs and pillows is the cozy reading area they will create! A significant portion of our students are scoring below proficiency in reading, and this will provide an ideal location for our students to continue to work on their literacy skills. This seating would also be extremely beneficial for our students' social and emotional learning. This cozy reading corner can be used a "cool down zone" for students to deal with emotional distress during the school day. The book cart and fold and go rolling carts will allow us to maximize our class time while simultaneously increasing student independence. Media class is only 45 minutes long and too much of that time is spent checking in books before class even begins. Fold and go carts make it possible for students to deliver the classroom books to the media center in the morning, long before class begins. This allows me to check in the books outside of class time. It also gives them an important role in ensuring class goes smoothly, which shows them they play a large role in their education. These few items will truly transform our media program.
